Hiding Behind the Smile
by Donna D'Amelio

What lies can I speak today
That say that I'm okay
To hide the fear that lives within
This battered heart of mine.

Faces come and faces go
With the passing of each day
And armor is the skin I wear
That hides behind the smile.

Now you tell me once again
As you walk out my front door
You have found another love
And the knife's blade goes deep.

Tears spill from my eyes
Like blood they stain the earth
I forge yet another plate
To cover all the pain.

So when you ask if I'm okay
I smile and say I'm fine
The armor's nearly finished
When done, I die inside.
